To get out of debt

To be honest I don't have a real hard luck story. I have a husband and three children. My husband and I both work and are able to meet basic needs. We have accumulated debt through three job losses and would like to get rid of it in order to do a bit better. As most people know, getting out of the debt cycle is a challenge ("robbing Peter to pay Paul" etc.). I would like to get out of debt and remain that way so that the big banks and credit card companies no longer get so much of our money in interest. I wish to start working toward my children's future, i.e. saving for their education. We don't have horrible life - we are just hoping to make it a bit better. Thank you.
