Out of work for 1 year and ran up debt

Deep in Debt, NY

Hello, In 2010 I had to quit my job and move back home to help my aging mother who needed to retire. She had got to the age where she simply could not work anymore. I took over paying her mortgage and household bills. Ultimately, I ended up out of work for 1 year. I was also unable to sell my house. With no income for 1 year, paying 2 mortgages has put me deep in debt. I pay as much as I can every month but with credit card debt, you can never seem to get ahead. It has got to the point where I go without medical attention that I need in order to pay my bills. My gums are receding but I simply don’t have the cash to get them taken care of. My health is suffering because I lose sleep worrying about how I am going to ever pay off all the debt. I really just need to get my debt down to a manageable level. Expenses go up every year and I don’t know how I will ever keep up. I work extra hours to raise my income as much as I can. I am now at the point where I don’t see very many options for us. I have tried to put my house back on the market but there are repairs needed that I simply can’t pay for. When I offer to take the cost of the repairs off the sale price, I can’t get enough for the house to pay off the mortgage so the sale won’t close. It is humiliating to be in this position. I never thought it would come to this. I wish I could go back and do things differently but this is the position I am in now so I have to resort to whatever solutions I can find. It has been a very humbling and embarrassing experience. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

housing emergency

Single mom, Ny

i am a single mom with a toddler, and a child on the way i became displaced from my home and had to move in with my childrens disabled grandmother, bless her soul she took us into her 3 room apartment, me and my children sleep on the floor. we have recently been approved to have help from habbitat for humanity, however we have to have $ 3,500 to qualify. Despite my best efforts to get more hours at work, ( i am pregnant and boss had cut my hours) selling things, and every other aspect of earning the money myself that i have tried, i am not able to make enough money. I have reduced myself to begging, swallowing my pride, because honestly having a home for my family is more important than dignity. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thankyou for taking the time to read my story.

Lost my Job

Lost my Job, NY

I worked as a Legal Secretary for 27 years, no medical benefits or retirement plan. I lost my job because my husband got sick with Leukemia & I was given a leave of absence at my job. Unfortunately, my husband was terminally ill & not going to survive & I wanted to spend the last days he had with him. Unfortunately, my husband passed away & a week later, I called my job to tell them that I would be back, but never got a response. I repeatedly called & insisted in speaking to my boss, who was hesistant to speak to me. He told me the temp they hired was now permanent (lower salary) & that is how I lost my job.

In desperate need of a new furnace

Desperatemuppet, NY

My husband and I work for a non-profit company serving individuals with disabilities. While the work is steady (which is huge in this day and age) the pay is very minimal (unfortunately a common theme I'm finding) and we have not received any raises/cost of living increases in the last three years despite the large increases of actual living expenses. We live paycheck to paycheck (barely) and have no reserve for emergencies/extras. With the start of the cold/heating season we discovered that we have a large unrepairable crack in our furnace. We have gotten estimates and the cheapest with installation (as well as changing old piping) is $4000.00 of which we don't have. Since we make so little we are not qualified for any loans and we are running out of time. Please help us replace our dangerous (and soon to be non-working) furnace so we don't freeze this winter!! Thank you in advance for your generosity!
