Ferret owner in need, Boston, MA

Hello and thank you for taking the time to read my post. I'm a full-time college student working and trying to make ends meet. I am a faithful "fuzzy", ferret, owner who has come into a bit of a problem though. One of my ferrets has adrenal disease. Now, adrenal disease in ferrets is their adrenal gland becoming hyperactive and producing more hormones than needed. This over production of hormones causes the ferret to lose their fur, become hostile, aggressive, constantly itchy, and switches its’ mind to think that its mating season 24/7 until the glands are removed. Adrenal disease has a tendency to swell up the vulva (in females) and the prostates (in males) resulting in difficulty with urinating and can cause the bladder to explode if urine is not periodically released, and of course that would be fatal. I adopted my ferret Kumo in May 2011, from a ferret shelter and they did not seem to know for sure if he had adrenal disease or not. They just knew that he didn’t have much hair when he arrived at the shelter and so they assumed it was adrenal disease (because usually when a ferret loses a lot of hair that’s a big red flag and indicator for the disease). In the paperwork I have for him, it just says “adrenal disease? “ under the section for medical problems. I was informed that Kumo had taken an implant to make his hair grow back. What they failed to tell me was information on adrenal disease, the name of the implant, and that it needed to be re applied every three months. Around August 2011 I noticed Kumo becoming sexually aggressive and hostile towards my other two ferrets, and marking wherever he went. I researched some information and found his symptoms to be that of a ferret who does have the disease. I also found that there are implants available for ferrets with the disease so I went to my vet and asked to have them injected into Kumo. A few weeks later he started losing more and more fur. In the end, I found out that the implants only mask the symptoms but the disease is still there. The only way to get rid of it is to have the adrenal glands removed. They have two glands and both should be removed during surgery. Unfortunately I do not have the $2,500 dollars for the surgery and Kumo needs it asap or he will die before his time. My two jobs do not pay well so it would take me about 5-6 months to save up the money. He’s going on 4yrs old and with this disease running rampid inside him I don’t think he can hold on much longer. If you can, please help my little white cloud Kumo. Thank you very much.

In big trouble

In big trouble, VA

I'm normally to proud, but I'm asking for help. I have got myself in some trouble which i will admit is my fault but I would say most of you would do the same. So here's the story, My father passed away a while back, I was appointed Executor of the Estate, well I got layed off and didn't have enough to pay my bills, Rather than starve my family out, I used money out of the Estate. I've been trying to put it back for months, but I can seem to work enough hours to save that much. I've tried the bank but I can't get the money. I know if I don't get all the $5000 back in before I have to finalize the estate, I'll probably goto prison. I've never been in any trouble before but it looks like I'm really in it now. I'm sure there are other people worse off than me, If so help them instead of me. I could use some help if you think I deserve it but I'm prepared to suffer the consequences of my actions.

Total lack of options!

Help!!! Stuck in South Afric, Johannesburg, South Africa

Hi, My name is Rob. I am a Scot by birth. I have been stuck in South Africa with my wife and 5 yr old son since 2006. We met while working for the same company and after 2 good years together in Scotland decided to marry. Our original plan was to come to SA to get married. My wife’s family is all from here and it was too costly for them to travel to the UK. Besides, the weather is far better for a wedding here. The currency was also very favorable. After we were married we looked round and decided to give “the new South Africa” a chance. What a mistake that has turned out to be! The work situation for white people only held out until 2009. I am a self employed builder and carpenter with some 12 years experience and many successful projects to my name. My wife Lee is hunting for a job at present, she was retrenched in December. Due to the fact that we have legislation here in SA that denotes which jobs can be given to whites and which have to be given to non-whites. Here I fall into problematic territory. There are practically no jobs that I can even apply for! We have been surviving on small jobs to keep money coming in, however the situation for whites here is getting worse. As a sole trader I am unable to apply for tenders, quotes etc. This makes finding profitable jobs almost impossible. The jobs that come in usually get me around 100 rand per day (equivalent to 20 US dollars per day). It is barely enough to feed the three of us. Food prices are rising rapidly here. We are getting nowhere! The downturn here made short work of what savings we had. The only saving grace has been that we have stayed out of debt. I honestly don’t know how much longer we can stay that way. You may be wondering where all of this is leading to, let me explain. We have applied for many jobs in the UK over the last 2 years. We have been accepted for several positions with included accomodation. As a UK citizen I can return with my family and work there. However, We cannot get enough money together to relocate the three of us back to the UK! Our target is 5000 US dollars. This will allow my family and I to get flights with some left over to see to emergencies. (with a five year old you never know!!!) Any donation is most appreciated by the three of us.
